It was the perfect weather for a run on Sunday morning as hundreds of Hebrew Academy stakeholders converged in Côte Saint-Luc for the school’s second ever 5K Fun Run/Walk. The event launched yearlong celebrations marking Hebrew Academy’s 50th anniversary and everyone – from students, parents and grandparents to faculty, staff and alumni – came out in the spirit of HA pride.

“The HA Fun run is a wonderful, feel-good event that brings out school spirit,” said avid runner Emmanuel Amar, who co-chaired the Fun Run together with fellow HA parents Rachel Goodman Aspler, Sandra Fine and Ilan Dahan. “It’s becoming a community event where our local vendors get to participate as well as sponsors and we thank them very much for their support.”

Noteworthy attendees included distinguished Côte St. Luc community members Mayor Mitchell Brownstein, District 7 Councillor Sidney Benizri, and Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, who delivered opening remarks alongside HA President Shlomo Drazin and Head of School Dr. Kalman Stein.

“Seeing the span of generations that attended the Fun Run was just remarkable,” said Dr. Stein. “From grandparents who’ve been involved with Hebrew Academy for decades to toddlers who’ve just joined our two-year-old class, it was incredible to see everyone come out. The population really highlighted our school’s legacy and the connection we’ve created with HA family members past, present and future.”

About 300 people attended the event which featured upbeat music, a photo-booth, healthy snacks and warm-up and cool-down exercises led by Certified Personal Fitness Trainer Danny Cohen.

The 5K run began outside the school on Kellert Avenue, continued through Trudeau Park’s Shalom Bloom Sculpture Garden and then along Mackle Road where it looped around Hudson.

Participants with young children had the option of participating in a 1K run, while many chose to walk one of the two routes. After the run, families enjoyed a fabulous children’s carnival sponsored by the Hebrew Academy Parent Association complete with face-painting, inflatable rides, one-on-one basketball games, an obstacle course and circus animators.

“I’m so excited to see the energy level, commitment, cooperation and sense of purpose among our volunteers and staff as we launch our 50th anniversary celebrations,” said Hebrew Academy Executive Director Linda Lehrer.  “The Fun Run is the first of many exciting activities planned for the 2017-18 academic year.”

Hebrew Academy is grateful to the following sponsors who contributed to the Fun Run’s overwhelming success: Traiteur Beso Catering, Century 21 – Karen Ohana, Courtier immobilier résidentiel, Davcon Construction, Elna Bistro, Fruiterie Maruti, J&R Kosher Meat Delicatessen Inc. and Kinatex Sports Physio – CSL, NDG.
