Kings of the Tennis Courts

Once again Hebrew Academy ruled the courts, only this time the courts were made of clay rather than hardwood.  On May 10 Hebrew Academy sent a team of midget tennis players to compete in the GMAA Tennis Tournament – a competition open to all private and public schools in Montreal.  When the dust settled, Hebrew Academy was awarded the Team Championship Banner, the overall gold medal, the gold medal for individual play, and  the  silver medal for team play. This was the first tennis championship ever won by hebrew Academy!

Representing our school were six players, who were divided  into two singles and two doubles. Charlie Friedman was ranked #1 in the singles, while Yossi Saleh was ranked #2. In the doubles, the #1 team was Benji Dahan and Jacob Israel and #2 was Adam Ziri and David Dayan.

Even before the competition was over, Hebrew Academy was awarded the Team Championship Banner, because our total number of victories during the day far surpassed all other competing  schools.

Leading the way for Hebrew Academy was Charlie Friedman, who won individual gold in the singles by defeating players from  LaurenHill Academy, Herzliah, Loyola and Lower Canada College in the preliminaries.

In the round robin events, Yossi Saleh defeated Vincent Massey Collegiate, while in the doubles event, Benji Dahan and Jacob Israel won all four games in the round robin, defeating Herzliah, Kuper Academy, Lower Canada College and Loyola. While the boys beat Kuper Academy in the quarter finals and LaurenHill Academy in the semi-finals, they lost to Lower Canada College in the championship game and left with the silver medal.

Our other doubles team, composed of Adam Ziri and David Dayan,  lost toLower Canada College, but defeated Herzliah, Vincent Massey Collegiate and Royal West in the round robin and then went on to win the quarter final against Loyola only to lose to Lower Canada College in the semi-finals. Adam and David left with the bronze medal.

Congratulations to all of our Grade 9 ahtletes for their outstanding accomplishments!
